The REAL Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse detox diet, commonly referred to as the Lemonade Diet, consists of drinking concoctions of lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for at least seven days.  During this time, the dieter is also encouraged to drink laxative teas in order to aid in flushing out toxins from the body.  It’s a masterful plan.  Lose weight and detox your body in minimal time by eating…nothing.  It’s a wonder that you would lose weight from eating nothing and drinking laxative teas for anywhere from seven to fourteen days.  It’s genius, really. 

On a more serious note, why would you do this to your body?  We have developed the mentality that health must be associated with some level of pain and sacrifice, but this is simply not true.  Health does not have to be painful.  In fact, I’m not even saying that all cleanses are bad.  Many cleanses can help regulate and restore the body and its vital organs back to a healthful state.  What I’m merely stating is that the body needs fuel, needs nutrients and does not need to be put into a state of starvation in order to be rid of toxins (or to shed a few pounds).  You know those colorful things that grow in the ground, from plants and even from trees.  Those things…these fruits and vegetables, are the true components to a “master cleanse.”

Eating your fruits and veggies.  What a novel idea.  High in fiber and packed with essential nutrients, eating a healthy dose of both fruits and vegetables will keep your body in tip top shape.  If what you put into your body is healthy, there is little need for further cleansing.  And if you would like to follow a detox cleanse, make sure that your body is consistently being supplied with vitamins and minerals.  If a detox diet can help you to get your pattern of eating back on the healthy track, then that is exactly what it should be used for in regards to your body.  As a means of dieting, detox is not the solution as it cannot be introduced as a permanent means of nourishment and will likely only result in weight regain as you slide back to your old ways.  Introduce healthy eating as your form of continuous and permanent detoxification.

    In a perfect world, where we had clean cells and colons, you would be correct. The problem is that most of us have years old toxic residues trapped in our colons, and an overload of toxic cellular debris. When you eat food, even raw fruits and veggies, there is a burden placed on your digestive system to process that food. Your body is not completely devoted to cleansing. When you do a Master Cleanse, by abstaining from food, you are giving your body the ability to place it’s full attention on cleansing. It is finally given the time and space to “clean house”. The reason for laxative tea and the salt water flush is to rinse the newly released toxins out of your colon so that they aren’t reabsorbed into the blood stream. The lemon juice provides enzymes and nutrients. The grade B maple syrup provides carbohydrates (in the form of slow-absorbing, natural sugar) as well as tons of minerals to support the body during the detoxification process. Because of the liquid form, these 2 ingredients are easily absorbed and require very little digestion (ie, energy) from your body, allowing it to do it’s cleansing work. The cayenne pepper stimulates circulation which also initiates an intrinsic cleansing effect for your whole body. I’ve done the MC twice and had massive amounts of energy (more than normal) the entire time I was on it. And I say that after being a raw foodist for 2 yrs. Animals in nature fast intentionally, especially when sick. They instictively know it will speed their recovery.
