How To Make A Castor Oil Pack

Filed Under: Health Aids,Health Concerns & Ailments at 10:30 am | By: Jeremy Michael, Contributing Author

Castor oil, or ricinus communis, has been used throughout the ages as a natural therapy. Castor oil applied topically in the form of “packs” is a popular way to aid in decreasing inflammation throughout the body, especially in the abdominal area. It has also been used to improve elimination of toxins and increase circulation especially in the lymphatic and circulatory system.

Castor oil can be used to reduce the pain and discomfort of endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts and other inflammatory conditions of the abdominal or pelvic regions. A castor oil pack may also be applied to the liver region of the abdomen during a cleanse, or when a person has inflammation/hepatitis.

How To Make A Castor Oil Pack:

Fold a piece of flannel or wool cloth into 2-4 layers, or a suitable size to cover recommended body area. Saturate the pack in castor oil. Cover the pack in plastic to prevent oil from ruining your clothes and linen, and apply it to the area of the body you wish to treat. Place a heating pad on top of the pack and turn the heating pad on medium heat, high if tolerable.  The treatment should continue for 45 minutes. Longer treatments are not harmful, though it is not advisable to fall asleep with the heating pad on. To complete your treatment, remove the castor oil pack and cleanse your skin with a solution of 1-teaspoon baking soda to 1 pint of water. Regular soap may also be used.  The pack can be stored in a container in the refrigerator and be reused 20-25 times. After that time it should be washed or dry-cleaned. Your clinician will recommend the frequency of use.

Although castor oil packs are generally considered safe, there is some contraindication for use. These include using heat with uterine growths, bleeding, pregnancy, ulcers or while menstruating. Always check with your physician before treating yourself.
