A recent article states that the number of reported cases of winter bug has increased 83% compared to the same period last year in the UK.
The Health Protection Agency estimates there have been about 880,000 cases of norovirus, often known as the winter vomiting bug. This type of infection is generally short-lived although it can be very unpleasant while you are unwell.
Norovirus is highly contagious and can be transmitted by contact with an infected person, contaminated surfaces or objects, or through consuming contaminated food or water. It spreads rapidly in closed environments such as hospitals, schools and care homes. The usual peak period is January to March, so you still have time to take precautionary actions to prevent the bug this winter.
Washing your hands properly and frequently is a simple way to prevent the winter bug. You can also urge anyone who may have the bug to stay at home, and away from hospitals and care homes. If you do have the winter bug, a couple days of rest should be sufficient for recovery. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
