Chocoholic? I think not

Are you addicted to chocolate? Are you afraid to answer that, because you’re worried I’ll tell you to give it up? Well, don’t worry. I’m not going to, because you aren’t addicted to chocolate. Nobody is. That unquenchable craving for another piece is a result of our minds, not the candy. Yes, chocolate does have several buzz-inducing chemicals, but so do avocados and cheese. Are you addicted to those? And the chocolate with the highest level of addictive chemicals, dark chocolate, is also the least popular.  Why, then, are you hooked? Why can’t you get enough? Because, it’s the forbidden fruit, the guilty pleasure. It’s bad for you, so you want it more. But – and I hope this doesn’t dampen your obsession – chocolate isn’t all bad.

The medical benefits of consuming a small amount of dark chocolate have been touted for years. A 2005 study, found that eating 100 grams of dark chocolate a day for 15 days lowered blood pressure and increased the body’s ability to metabolize sugar.  More recent research has suggested that the compounds found in cocoa can help ward off heart disease and other illnesses, such as macular degeneration.  And if that’s not enough good stuff for you, doctors in England concluded that a single piece of dark chocolate can elicit a deeper reaction than a kiss. And, I don’t mean a peck on the cheek. When compared to a passionate kiss, melting a piece of dark chocolate on the tongue produced a longer-lasting, more intense, feel-good sensation.  So go ahead, indulge once in a while, but don’t overdo it.

As with all sweets, chocolate has fat, sugar and calories. And while the medical benefits exist, you can get the same ones from better foods, like fruits and vegetables. If you aren’t really craving the chocolate, don’t have it. If you are, eat it in moderation. Two tiny squares may satisfy the need, especially if you savor them slowly. Or, opt for healthier chocolate. There are plenty of ways to get a chocolate fix without consuming an unwarranted amount of calories.
