Herb of the Week: Bladderwrack

Filed Under: Herbs at 12:11 pm | By: Mauricio Matusiak, Senior Editor
Bladderwrack

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a seaweed found on the northern part of the Atlantic ocean and also on the Pacific coast of the United States.

The main stem of the algae is known as the thallus and is commonly used medicinally.

The thallus has tough, air-filled pods or bladders to help the algae float, the reason for the name bladderwrack.

Bladderwrack has been used medicinally since the 1860s for its rich abundance of iodine to support several health problems, including constipation, diarrhea, gastritis, indigestion and heartburn.

People living near oceans or seas have a historically low rate of hypothyroidism, due, in part, to ingestion of iodine-rich food, such as seafood and seaweeds like bladderwrack.

The plant has also been used to treat the thyroid gland. Supplements from bladerwrack may help stimulating and balancing the thyroid gland, leading to faster metabolism.

Consequently, frequent supplementation of bladerwrack may increase the rate at which calories are burned, promoting a healthier metabolism and helping the endless battle of weight loss. Numerous weight loss products contain bladerwrack in their herbal blend formulas

In addition, bladderwrack is used to rid the body to toxins and radiation material by preventing their absorption. It promotes the growth of healthy tissue, skin, hair and nails.
