Herb of the Week: Gotu Kola

Filed Under: Herbs at 11:30 am | By: Mauricio Matusiak, Senior Editor
Gotu Kola

Gotu kola, also known as centella asiatica, is a small herbaceous plant native to India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and other parts of Asia. This plant grown in tropical, swampy areas and the roots and leaves are used medicinally.

The list of uses for gotu kola shows the potency of this herb used in India similar to how the Chinese use ginseng.

Gotu kola is a mild adaptogen, antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, a cerebral tonic, a circulatory stimulant, a diuretic and an anit-ulcerogenic.

Gotu kola has been used to treat and prevent a variety of illnesses including high blood pressure, rheumatism, fever and nervous disorders. Its common applications in Ayurvedic medicine include heart disease, water retention and bronchitis.

In addition, numerous skin diseases can be treated with daily supplementation of gotu kola. Several studies have showed that the topical form can improve healing of burns and wounds, skin ulcers, chronic venous insufficiency and preventing and treating enlarged scars.

Recent research suggests that the triterpenes in the herb are able to stimulate collagen – the component that creates connective tissues – production and increase circulation, encouraging the body’s ability to naturally recuperate. Upon treatment with gotu kola, maturation of the scar is stimulated by the production of type I collagen. Treatment will also decrease inflammatory reaction.

Furthermore, regular use of gotu kola may support the brain and nervous system, increasing attention, focus and concentration.

Gotu kola is safe to be taken on a daily basis and does not contain caffeine.
