According to studies, alpha lipoic acid may help treat and prevent cardiovascular disease, prevent organ dysfunction, treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes, accelerate chronic wound healing, improve or prevent age-related cognitive dysfunction, slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, prevent migraines, and reduce inflammation. Additionally, studies have shown that ALA in conjunction with acetyl-carnitine may have anti-aging properties.
Alpha lipoic acid is sometimes referred to as the “universal antioxidant” because it is soluble in both fat and water. The human body produces alpha lipoic acid and foods containing mitochondria, such as red meats, are believed to provide the most ALA. This beneficial nutrient is also found in vegetarian sources. Spinach, broccoli, and leafy dark green vegetables, such as kale, are excellent sources of alpha lipoic. Another main source of is yeast, which contains an abundance of the antioxidant.
Supplements are available and sometimes labeled as “energy” products. ALA supplements contain a greater amount of the nutrient than food, with potency ranging from 100mg to 600mg per serving. Side effects are rare but be sure to consult with a health care professional before starting taking alpha lipoic acid supplements.
