Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide – NADH – is the active coenzyme form of vitamin B3. Some people may have heard of NADH as a supplement but a little more information can be helpful and useful.
NADH plays an essential role in the energy production of every human cell. This natural coenzyme, derived from vitamin B-3 and also known as niacin, is responsible for metabolism, respiration, the breakdown of sugars and fats, and the production of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) the primary energy molecule in our cells.
NADH supplies ATP energy to the brain, nerves, muscles, heart and all other organs, in order to function. In addition, research indicates that NADH is a powerful antioxidant that may help cardiovascular health, enhance mood and emotional balance, promote vitality and offset occasional fatigue.
Fatigue is generally the result of daily stress and poor dieting. A stressful job, family problems and extra activities may result in body and mental fatigue. One molecule of NADH creates 3 molecules of ATP, which generates the energy needed by the human cells, minimizing the stress levels and, therefore, preventing fatigue.
Can you get NADH from food sources? Yes, this coenzyme is found in muscle tissues of fish and poultry, as well as in food products made with yeast. However, NADH from these sources may not be efficiently absorbed or utilized by the body.
It is available as a nutritional supplement and regular NADH supplementation has been used to prevent and treat several health issues such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer disease and depression.
