Stay Cool with Probiotics

Probiotics are one of the best products you can take on a regular basis. If you never heard of it, or you are not very familiar with, probiotics are dietary supplements that provide beneficial bacteria.

Probiotics can prevent gastrointestinal infections, fortify the immune system and convert sugars and carbohydrates into lactic acid. Normally found in foods such as yogurt and dairy products, the addition of the “good bacteria” can also help with numerous problems: lowering cholesterol, managing lactose intolerance, lowering blood pressure, preventing colon cancer and reducing inflammation. The list of potential benefits can go on and on, but you should also know a few more details about this incredible product.

First, probiotics are live microorganisms very sensitive to high temperature. Most companies do their best to provide a high quality product that normally can stand some heat exposure without losing its potency. However, keep the product refrigerated is a must. If you are ordering online, companies should provide a cold pack.

Second, summer is here and with high temperatures nationwide, we often ask ourselves: what can I do to still receive my probiotics in “good shape”?

Well, if you are buying it at your local health food store, make sure that’s your last stop before you go home. You do not want the product sitting in your cars for hours. If you are shopping online, you can either plan ahead and order enough for the entire summer or choose an expedite shipping method, significantly reducing transit time.

Shelf stable probiotis are also available. Although their potency isn’t as good as the refrigerated products, you can still find a good amount of probiotic bacteria in their formulas and, at least for the summer and all your vacation/traveling time, it can be a great alternative.

    i’ve got major GI problems and I found that a great way to get my dose of probiotics (which I swear by!) is by eating Laloo’s Goat Milk Ice Cream. A woman named Laura Howard started the company a few years ago and the ice cream and frozen yogurt is made from, you guessed it, goat milk. There is a very good explanation here of her desire to be a part of the slow food movement as well as the benefits of probiotics:

    I used to get my probiotics from kefir but just found out the our local grocer would stop selling it soon! Any suggestions on other natural sources of probiotics? I might be forced to take supplements instead.
