The Benefits of Bromelain

Filed Under: Supplements at 11:21 am | By: Mauricio Matusiak, Senior Editor
Pineapples

Bromelain supplements have become popular because of its multitude of uses and potential benefits. If you are still not familiar with this product, bromelain has been sold primarily as a digestive enzyme and provides one of the highest natural potencies of protein-digesting enzyme available. While most enzymes are generally considered to be poorly absorbed, studies have shown bromelain is the most absorbable of all enzymes.

Bromelain is derived from pineapples but supplementation is necessary to achieve optimum levels of this enzyme. A formula containing several of these natural enzymes may be your best choice to get significant results and regulate your digestive system.

In addition, bromelain has a number of medical uses and works by blocking some proinflammatory metabolites that accelerate and worsen the inflammatory process. As an anti-inflammatory agent, it can be used for sports injury, trauma, arthritis, and other kinds of swelling. Supplements containing bromelain are used to enhance the immune system, treat sinus infections, and for treatment of athletic injuries, phlebitis, sinusitis, and aiding healing after surgery.

Bromelain is present in all parts of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus), but the stem is the most common commercial source. Pineapples have had a long tradition as a medicinal plant among the natives of South and Central America. However, you will not get enough bromelain from just eating pineapple as it is most highly concentrated in the stem.

Bromelain is generally prepared from the stem part of the pineapple plant after harvesting the fruit. This stem part is peeled, crushed and pressed to get the juice containing the soluble bromelain enzyme.
