Borage flower

It always appears to be a little bit strange when a beautiful flower may actually be used for health supplements, providing numerous benefits. Borage is a perfect example of this case.

Originally from Syria, but now found everywhere in the world, borage is also known as Starflower. This large plant with beautiful blue, star-shaped flowers is cultivated for culinary and medicinal use, with the majority of the production for oil seed. Borage oil has very high amounts of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family.

EFAs are essential to the human body for many reasons. We most obtain EFAs from food since our system does not produce it. EFAs are important for normal brain function, bone health, regulation of metabolism and the hormonal system and stimulation of skin and hair growth.

Health practitioners believe borage oil can support PMS and menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and mood swings. Several products for PMS are adding borage oil to their formulas in order to improve results.

In addition, borage is used as a fresh vegetable for salads and as a garnish as well. Its flower is edible and has a sweet honey-like taste, also used to decorate desserts. Borage oil is good alternative for vegetarians trying to get GLAs. Borage oil has the highest known amount of GLA from plant-based source. (24-28%).

You may take Borage oil as a supplement if you are missing omega-6 from your diet. If you don’t like most of the vegetables oils normally used as an omega-6 source, borage may be the best choice for you.
