Drinking Green Tea May Protect Your Health

Filed Under: Health Concerns & Ailments,Teas at 12:00 pm | By: Mauricio Matusiak, Senior Editor

A simple beverage switch may provide a ton of health benefits. For example, changing from coffee or black tea to green tea offers more benefits than you may know.

A recent Japanese study carried out over 11 years and involving more than 40,000 men and women aged 40 to 79 found that people drinking four cups of green tea a day suffered with less heart disease than people who didn’t drink tea. In fact, heart disease was reduced by 31 per cent in women and 22 per cent in men. Additionally, levels of psychological stress were 20 per cent lower in people who drank at least five cups of green tea daily.

Green tea has been known to be a healthier alternative to other beverages with numerous health-boosting properties. Drinking green tea helps reduce your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and helps prevent the build-up of fatty plaque on your artery walls that can cause heart attacks. Studies have shown that drinking green tea can be helpful to treat headaches and joint pain.

Green tea is generally less processed and contains more simple flavonoids than black tea. These flavonoids protect your body from free radicals that can damage your body’s cells. Leaves used to make black tea are fully oxidized, whilst those for green tea or white tea are lightly steamed, which helps to preserve important vitamins and minerals.

In addition, green tea can be an excellent energy booster as it may improve your concentration, short-term memory, and reduce tiredness levels. Drinking several cups of green tea a day is a great way to replenish your body’s fluid levels as green tea contains health enhancing flavonoids, vitamins B1, B2, B6, folic acid, zinc, manganese and potassium.
