Today, black cohosh supplements are used to treat symptoms associated with menopause but it can also help with premenstrual tension and menstrual cramps. Recent studies have shown that black cohosh reduces hot flashes in 35 percent of cases. Moreover, many women have been taken the herb regularly without reporting adverse health effects. So, if 35 percent of users get relief from hot flashes and supplements are safe to be taken, you have nothing to lose.
Black cohosh acts as an antispasmodic to muscles, nerves, and blood vessels and as a muscle anti-inflammatory. It contains the anti-inflammatory salicylic acid, the base for the active ingredient in aspirin, among several other constituents such as triterpene glycosides, isoflavones, aromatic acids, tannins, resins, fatty acids, starches, and sugars.
Black cohosh seems particularly effective for uterine cramps and muscle pain caused by nervous tension, as well as pains accompanied by stiffness, soreness, and tight sensations or contractions. Additionally, black cohosh supplements may relax the uterus, especially when tension is caused by anxiety.
Women taking black cohosh supplements on a regular basis have experienced decreased night sweats, improved sleep, and less nervous tension during the day.
