Vitamin K2 Provides Hope for Parkinson’s Patients

k2Vitamin K2 deficiency is on the rise and linked to many age-related health conditions such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). This common neurodegenerative disorder adversely affects the central nervous system, targeting the part of the brain associated with critical functions such as vision, hearing and movement.

Though there may not be a definitive cause for PD many believe it is most likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. However, some PD cases are being attributed to mutations of specific genes, which have a negative impact on protein function. One such gene is PINK1, which functions as the powerhouse of the cell (mitochondria) and plays a crucial role in the process of neuron differentiation.

A recent study in Science revealed an exciting discovery that vitamin K2 alleviates the negative effects of the Parkinson’s-specific PINK1 mutations in fruit flies.  Flies are used most in genetic and biological studies because their inner workings and cellular activities closely reflect what occurs within our very own cells. Amazingly, PINK1-deficient flies fed vitamin K2 exhibited significantly improved flight, energy levels and survival rates compared with flies that were not supplemented with the vitamin.

Furthermore, the research revealed that vitamin K2 could transport electrons, a vital step in energy production. Overall the results from this study show a significant leap in our scientific understanding of the potential of vitamin K2, and were a welcome development for those suffering from, not only Parkinson’s, but from a variety of other diseases and disorders.
