You use them on a daily basis to help wipe your babies clean. You might even be using them on yourselves for other reasons then just baby wipes. Uses for baby wipes these days reach far beyond using them to clean up a baby’s bottom. Mostly, these wipes are used on the gentle and delicate surface of your baby’s skin and maybe even on your face to remove make-up.  Have you ever stopped to think what chemicals are inside those wipes?

Conventional baby wipes contain Parabens. Parabens are a family of chemicals that occur naturally in some foods and are added to many products to extend their shelf life. These so-called toxic byproducts are then absorbed through your baby’s skin. There are numerous deleterious health affects associated with paraben exposure. One thought is that due to their weak ability to mimic estrogen, parabens might be a potential cause for the increase in breast cancer incidences.

Another common ingredient found in baby wipes is propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is the same chemical used in antifreeze. Research done on this chemical over the years has been controversial. Propylene glycol has been deemed safe by the FDA and World health organization. However one research article showed that there might be an association with allergies, eczema, and exposure to propylene glycol.  The material safety data sheet for propylene glycol showed that in rare cases, repeated exposure to propylene gylcol may cause central nervous system effects.

Additionally, artificial fragrances are another common additive to conventional baby wipes. The chemicals that are often used to formulate fragrances can become toxic to the body over time. It is estimated that 95% of synthetic fragrances used today are made from petroleum by-products. Repeated exposure to these by-products has been linked with endocrine disruption and several types of cancers.  Phthalates have also been found in artificial fragrances and can also cause endocrine disruption as well as have carcinogenic effects.

LuckyVitamin has many all natural/organic baby wipes. These wipes are free of artificial fragrances, and free from harmful and irritating chemicals that can be found in conventional baby wipes.
