The proclamation: Viagra boosts your mood!
The response: Well, yeah.
It seems fairly self-evident that a man with erectile dysfunction is going to be in a better mood after he takes Viagra. After all, think about what the drug is supposed to do. Assuming everything goes as planned, it should actually boost the couple’s mood, not just the man’s. However, that happiness is not a direct response to the medication, and it’s not the mood boost I’m talking about.
According to researchers, the drug in Viagra and other erectile-dysfunction drugs, known as sildenafil, may enhance the brain’s release of oxytocin. Known as the love hormone, oxytocin stimulates romantic feelings and bonding between two people. It is released naturally during labor, breast feeding and orgasm. When rats at the University of Wisconsin-Madison were given Viagra, their brains released three times more of the hormone, meaning that the medication could be used to bring two people closer together physically and emotionally. It is important to note, however, that the drug, much like it does not cause erections, does not induce release; it simply increases it. But, that’s still good. It’s one more benefit we can add to the list for this little blue pill. What else is on that list? Happily, a lot.
Erectile-dysfunction (ED) drugs have been proven to decrease tumor size and help the immune system find and attack cancer cells. They can also lessen the stress to the heart and reduce heart muscle damage after a heart attack. In short, ED drugs strengthen more than one part of your body. But as with all medications, there are also risks. If you’ve had a heart attack, you’re more likely to suffer from vision loss while on Viagra. And as that danger increases, your visual reaction time and your ability to impregnate your partner decreases. But if you are well informed and take the drug as prescribed, it should do more help than harm. So, if you suffer from erectile dysfunction, see your doctor and talk about the steps you can take to boost your . . . mood.
