Miners, Menopause and Mood Lighting

MinerThe theory is that healthy workers equal productive workers. Therefore, it is in an employer’s best interest to maximize the wellbeing of his staff. Generally, this means providing access to gyms, encouraging exercise and nutritious eating, and offering a generous medical package. Some organizations take the endeavor a step further, bringing in outside professionals to address depression and stress. But even those methods don’t compare to what the bosses at the Australian mining company Xstrata are doing, namely pulling up a chair and educating their employees on the art of foreplay.

The Bulga miners, predominantly males in their 40s and 50s, have been attending “Toolbox Talks” for the past several months.  The lectures thus far have addressed fatigue, prostate cancer, nutrition and heart disease, common health concerns for men. The most recent one, though, discusses menopause and foreplay. The employers believe that teaching the men about the changes their wives are going through and how those changes affect bedroom satisfaction will help the miners maintain healthy sex lives. They’ll be happy at home and, in turn, happy at work. Productivity will rise and the company, along with the miners, will benefit. Hypothetically, it’s a win-win situation, but realistically will it work?

Absolutely. Sexual wellbeing and satisfaction is one of the most important parts of a healthy life. However, it is also one of the least discussed. A recent Men’s Health poll  found that while almost all men and women wanted to know how they could improve in the bedroom, only one quarter offered advice. Although their needs changed, their activities didn’t, and they weren’t as satisfied. For women going through menopause, this is a particularly pertinent issue, since their sex drive is changing along with their bodies.  Fulfillment requires a little more effort, from the male and female. Therefore, educating the men and teaching them how to please their wives can result in nothing but productivity, in the bedroom and the mines.

This all works until you get stuck in a mine shaft and need to be rescued.
