What’s Your Sexual Motivation?

CoupleWhy have sex?

I’m sure you just thought of at least two or three good reasons for having sex. We’ve all got a few filed away, and in “the moment”, a few more generally come to mind. These reasons can range from the sweet and romantic to the cruel and humiliating. Hopefully, yours fall into the first category or, at least, somewhere in between the two. But, only you know, and that is what is plaguing the minds of everyone else. Okay, not why you specifically are having sex, but rather why the masses in general are. Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks to researchers in Texas, they found out.

More than 400 men and women were polled to determine the top reasons for having sex. Once the list was whittled down to a mere 237, male and female college students were asked to rank the options. When the results were in, “I was attracted to the person” placed number one for both. In fact, researchers found that the discrepancies between genders weren’t huge. Men and women seem to have sex for the same reasons. Among those in the top fifty were: to express love, to please my partner, because it feels good and it just happened. In the bottom fifty were: jealousy, as a favor, because of a bet, to avoid doing something else and to get closer to God. Everything from I was drunk to I wanted to make my partner feel good about him/herself landed on the list and trust me, there were plenty more reasons worth mentioning. But, I’d like to draw your attention to one specific motivation: to burn calories.

Yes! Sex is exercise. It burns calories. It IS good for you. How? I’m glad you asked. Sex can burn up to 200 calories. That’s about the same as 15 minutes of running. Not bad, right? Wait. It gets better. Having sex works your pelvis, thighs, arms, butt, neck and thorax, and gets heart your heart rate going. Plus, it’s been shown to relieve minor pains, like headaches, and stress, helping you sleep and feel better. Bottom line, sex can be a beneficial part of a healthy life. While that probably shouldn’t be your primary reason for having it, it’s something you might want to keep in mind.
