Stay hydrated. This simple advice should have been the most common sentence this past week in most of the country. As the nation battled a severe heat wave, many people experienced health problems due to dehydration.

It seems so simple: drink enough water or liquids and your body will be OK. However, it’s much more difficult to stay hydrated when temperatures are rising above triple digits.

A few tips can be helpful if you’re having difficulties staying hydrated. Change your diet by adding fruits and vegetables specially in days with extreme high temperatures. Watermelon, berries, melons, apples and oranges provide good amounts of liquids. Leafy vegetables, as well as cucumbers, are also good to keep your body hydrated.

It’s also important to prevent or limit physical activities. The more you sweat, the more your body needs to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. Speaking of electrolytes, supplements may be a great source of electrolytes. Generally used for athletes, such as marathon runners and triathletes, or for athletes in any type of endurance competition, electrolytes products are also used by professionals facing extreme conditions and people recovering from diarrhea or other conditions when the body loses a lot of fluids. These safe products can be an alternative for very hot days.

Electrolytes supplements are normally available in liquid form but you can find some products in tablets too. Most products are safe and can be taken on a daily basis without any side effects, and continue use does not interfere with diets or exercise programs.
