1. Mushrooms

Mushrooms contain polysaccharides, which are compounds that support the immune system. Also known to increase the production of cytokines cells that help fight off infection, mushrooms are excellent cold and flu fighters particularly reishi, shitake, and maitake.

2. Honey

Honey has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to help fight infections from viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Honey is an excellent alternative for sugar and goes well with many hot beverages.

3. Garlic

One of the best immune system boosters, garlic has antiseptic, anti-fungal and nutritive properties. Studies have shown that garlic is a good preventative medicine against coughs, colds and chest infections during the winter or as a natural fast-acting antibiotic.

4. Oregano Oil

Oil of oregano has anti-fungal or antiviral properties and can provide relief to congestion by simply adding a couple drops of it to a vaporizer and inhaling for a few minutes. Drinking a few drops of oil in juice or water may also provide some relief from a sore throat.

5. Ginger

Ginger contains sesquiterpenes, an element which targets rhinoviruses, the most common family of cold viruses, as well as substances that help suppress coughing. Ginger is also a natural pain and fever reducer and a mild sedative.

6. Oranges

Oranges and other citrus fruits are well known to boost the immune system as they are great source of vitamin C. Studies have found that this antioxidant can reduce cold symptoms by 23 per cent and regular intake of vitamin C can help build up immunity.

7. Yogurt

An excellent source of probiotics, eating a cup of low-fat yogurt each day can reduce your susceptibility to colds by 25 percent. The beneficial bacteria is lactobacillus reuteri which has been found to block the replication of viruses that invade the body when we get sick.

8. Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of beta carotene, a powerful phytonutrient that boosts the immune system’s production of infection-fighting natural killer cells. Eating fresh raw carrots is the best way to get the most nutrients as cooking may remove some of its benefits

9. Hot Tea

Green and black tea contain flavonoids, which are potent antioxidants that help the immune system. A slice of lemon add extra benefits for a perfect hot beverage and great home remedy.

10. Spices

Spices can help your immunity too. Often used in immune support supplements, a variety of spices are known to enhance your immune system including pepper, garlic, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and sage.
