Taste Test Time: Breakfast Bars

Atkins BarYesterday, I discussed the importance of breakfast. I told you to choose wisely when selecting your a.m. nourishment, especially when on the run. I even went so far as to recommend breakfast bars as speedy, yet tasty meals. In the interest of furthering that suggestion, I and a few other LuckyVitaminers put Atkins Morning Start Bars Cranberry Almond and Oatmeal Raisin to the test. Here’s what we found:

Cranberry Almond – At the first bite, your mouth is flooded with almonds, so much so that you wonder if there could be room for any fruit in the intensely nutty flavor. Then, a tangy after-note appears: the cranberry. It is strong yet subtle, providing the perfect balance.

• Pros – Chunks of fruit and obvious bits of nuts allow you to be confident about what you’re eating. There’s no question that this is a cranberry almond bar.
• Cons – It’s a little dry and not as sweet as anticipated. If you’re looking for a sugar fix, you’ll be disappointed.
• Suggestions – Have a drink nearby, maybe a glass of juice or a sweeter coffee.

Oatmeal Raisin – The initial taste has you reexamining the package. What exactly are you eating? It’s a flavorful shock of sweetness you didn’t quite expect. The raisins add a delightfully chewy texture and the icing leaves you wondering if that miniscule sugar amount could be true.

• Pros – It’s a sweet way to get some much-needed fiber and protein without an overload of calories and sugar. You won’t know you’re being healthy.
• Cons – If anything, the raisin to oats ratio is too small. A few more pieces of sun-dried fruit would be a welcome addition. And, as with the Cranberry Almond, it’s a little dry.
• Suggestions – Have a drink on hand, but a word to the wise: the Oatmeal Raisin bar is very, very sweet. You don’t want to pair this with a sugary juice or any other sweetened beverage. A glass of milk or black coffee is the best way to go.
