The Benefits of Whole Food Honey

The benefits of honey have been known for many years but some people still wonder if it is healthy to add honey to your diet.

Honey can be a great addition to your diet if you can buy the right product and can use it with moderation. Choosing whole food honey is one of the most important aspects as unprocessed whole food honey is never heated or strained, and contains all the pollen, propolis, vitamins, honeycomb, live enzymes and trace minerals the bees put into it.

The majority of honey products available nationwide do not offer the same quality as whole food honey, with many brands processing the honey before it gets to retail stores. Processing honey minimize the amount of cappings, the highest concentrations of pollen and propolis, which are known for their healthful properties. Additionally, some conventional brands add sugar and preservatives, not to mention the pesticides or fertilizers used during production. If you want to choose a top quality honey product, check the labels to ensure the honey is never strained, never filtered, and never heated.

Secondly, use honey wisely. It can be used as substitute for sugar. For example, adding a spoon of honey to your tea or coffee creates a healthier beverage without minimizing the sweet taste you are looking for. If you like baking, consider honey instead of sugar in some of your recipes.

Honey and its related products such as propolis and royal jelly are also an excellent source of nutrients. Most whole food honey products contain proteins, amino acids, fatty acids, lipids, minerals and a multitude of vitamins such as B1, B2, B6, niacin, biotin and folic acid. Honey can be helpful to enhance the immune system, promote mental alertness, and improve energy levels.
