A lot of people say “salt is just salt” but people should be aware of the differences and the benefits of using sea salt instead of regular table salt. The main difference between sea salts and table salt is in the processing of the product, resulting in different taste and texture.
A top quality sea salt product is a better choice than ordinary table salt for many reasons. First, sea salt is produced through evaporation of ocean water using little processing. Sea salt contains about 80 mineral elements needed for the body.
Second, regular table salt is typically mined from underground salt deposits, more heavily processed to eliminate minerals, and often filtered and stripped of its companion elements such as magnesium and trace minerals. It may also contain additive elements such as aluminum silicate to keep it powdery and prevent clumping. The natural iodine is also destroyed during the refining process, so it is usually added back in the form of potassium iodide.
Lastly, both salts contain the same amount of sodium but since sea salt has a much stronger flavor than table salt, so you don’t need to use as much.
Even though excessive salt can cause health problems, salt provides sodium, which is necessary for life. It helps with muscle contraction and expansion, nerve stimulation, the proper functioning of the adrenals, and other biological processes, as well. Salt also provides chloride, which helps produce acids necessary to digest protein and enzymes for carbohydrate digestion, and is necessary for proper brain functioning and growth.
