In an interesting study released earlier this year, scientists found that walnuts appear to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Yes, you just read the previous statement correctly. Walnuts may keep Alzheimer’s disease at bay. Researchers at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities said an experiment with Alzheimer’s-susceptible mice found those that consumed walnuts showed significant improvement in their memory and learning skills compared with mice without walnuts.  Previous research has shown that walnuts have a protective effect in the brain preventing against oxidative damages. Walnuts are packed with omega 3 fatty acids which may help to explain some of their benefits for Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers in this study also looked at walnuts’ effects on anxiety, loco motor activity and motor coordination.  From the age of 4 months, they fed the experimental mice custom mixed diets containing 6% or 9% walnuts, which is equivalent to 1 or 1.5 oz of walnuts per day in humans. Again, the other groups were given no walnuts in their diets. At the age of 13-14 months, the mice were tested using a variety of mazes. These mazes tested loco motor skills, memory and learning ability, psychomotor coordination, as well as anxiety related behaviors. The mice that were not fed any walnuts showed memory deficits, anxiety-related behaviors and severe impairment in spatial learning ability. However, the mice fed the walnut rich diets showed significant improvement in memory, learning ability, anxiety and motor development.

Aiding in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease is not the only health benefit of walnuts. A quick Google search reveals that walnuts have been found beneficial in lowering cholesterol, reducing inflammation, lowering risk of diabetes, and also contain other antioxidants that boost heart health.
