Herb of the Week: Arnica

Arnica montanaArnica is one of the best natural pain relief products.

It has been used by professional athletes for many years to treat strains, bruises and sprains.

Arnica Montana, also known as leopard’s bane or wolf’s bane, is a flowering plant originally from Europe, from southern Iberia to southern Scandinavia.

It has been used medicinally in liniment and ointment preparations and the herb is also found in several homeopathic products.

Arnica preparations used topically have been demonstrated to act as an anti-inflammatory and assist normal healing processes by facilitating transport of blood and fluid accumulations through a dilating action of subcutaneous blood capillaries.

It is the one of the best products to treat minor injuries, such as bruises and sprains, accelerating the healing and recovery of muscles. It can be very useful in the early stages of an injury when there is swelling.

It may also work as a preventive product, prior and post workout. Injury may occur due to poor stretching or muscle fatigue. Arnica can be used in both cases to treat pain and soreness and other traumatic injuries, but continue use of product for more than seven consecutive days is not recommended.

Tablets are also used by some practitioners for similar conditions. One study showed that arnica gel applied twice daily reduced symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee and a double-blind study reported that a combination of topical arnica ointment and oral homeopathic arnica tablets reduced pain in people recovering from hand surgery.
