After reading an article last month about an incredible medicinal plant whose uses predate written records, I thought I needed to share some of the information I had learned. The medicinal properties of neem (Azadiracthaindica) have been known in India for over 4,000 years, yet most people have never heard of it.  A member of the Mahogany family, Meliaceae, neem is native to India and India’s subcontinent regions.

More than half of the world’s population still relies entirely on plants for medicines and neem is a great example of why they do so. This “jack of all trades” herb can be used for many different health conditions commonly seen today. Even more riveting is that almost all parts of the tree can be used, including the root, bark, resin, twigs leaves and more.  According to “The Medicinal Properties of Neem” the plant can be used to treat fatigue, coughs, fever, loss of appetite, worm infestations, chronic skin conditions as well as infections. The article also goes on to discuss one of the most important parts to the tree: the neem seed oil. This antimicrobial oil can be applied topically to fungal and bacterial skin infections.  Interestingly enough, the article also talks about the tree’s role in the treatment of cancer and other conditions.
