The Brilliance of Yellow

Turmeric PowderIt’s always satisfying when scientists take it upon themselves to inform you that they have bettered a substance, making it more beneficial and infinitely more rewarding, but that you won’t be able to reap the rewards of this breakthrough until more tests have been done. You’re left feeling somehow weaker, nutritionally deprived and antsy for the next set of trials to be completed. This is the case, today, for turmeric, or more specifically curcumin, the most powerful part of turmeric.

Curcumin is the substance that makes turmeric yellow and spicy. It is credited as being a powerful anti-inflammatory, effective against inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis pain, cystic fibrosis and some cancers. However, when ingested, curcumin quickly loses much of its disease-fighting strength, making eating turmeric less helpful than it could be. Fortunately, scientists in Japan have developed two synthetic versions that are both more potent and longer lasting than natural curcumin.  Unfortunately, they’ve only been tested on mice and are unavailable to the general public. So until they appear in your nutritional store, are you out of luck?

No. The creation of a synthetic, possibly stronger curcumin does not render the natural completely useless. There is a reason it has been used to treat ailments for thousands of years. The Chinese and Indians prescribed it for flatulence, jaundice, menstrual problems, bloody urine, hemorrhage, tooth ache, chest pain and colic because it worked. Today, we continue to use it for heartburn, stomach ulcers and gallstones as well as inflammation because it works.  Curcumin is a powerful substance, even after ingestion dissipates some of its goodness. So continue consuming it through turmeric. Eventually you’ll have more options, but eventually is not now.
