5 Places You’re Forgetting To Put Sunscreen

father applying sunblock cream on daughters shoulder, sun protectionYou spent all day soaking up the sun only to wake up the next day with a wicked burn and a deep yearning for a bottle of aloe vera to dull the pain. Sound familiar?

Some of the worst burns happen on overcast days when cloud-filled skies can cause even the most faithful sun worshippers to (unwisely) skip the screen, unknowing that 80% of the sun’s UV rays can easily slice through the typical cloud coverage. Even if you do apply, just because you lather up your legs, arms and face doesn’t mean that you’re completely protected.

Here are some oft overlooked spots that need some sunscreen love!

Ears – When you apply sunscreen to your face don’t forget the ears. Whether you’re driving or wearing a baseball hat, remember that your ears are exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. A recent study from the Skin Cancer Foundation found the ears to be one of the most common places to find skin cancer.

Scalp – Greasy hair, don’t care! Apply sunscreen on your hair or (if you’re follicley challenged) scalp to prevent a painful burn. Even better, wear a hat (but see above about making sure your ears are protected). A team of researcher at UNC found that the most deadly melanoma skin cancers occur on this area of your body. Tip: use a Q-tip for an easy, clean application.

Tops of Feet – Did you know the soles of feet have a layer of dead skin cells which protect against UV rays? Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the tops of our feet which, of course, actually face the sun. Plus, getting burnt here is pretty painful especially if you have to wear shoes.

Lips – Whether you’re sipping on a tropical smoothie or eating some healthy snack on the beach, lip protection can come off pretty easily, so reapplying is always a good idea. Our top pick combines organic sunflower seed oil, organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, and vitamin E to protect your lips under the harshest conditions.

Tops of Hands – Our hands show age and sun spots before our face. Reapplying here is key, especially if you wash your hands a lot. Here’s a little tip from us: use face sunscreen on your hands. It’s loaded with ingredients to prevent further damage. This ultra-sheer lotion features fruit stem cells to diminish photo-aging and stimulate healthy cell renewal for age-defying benefits

Ha, these are great tips. So easy to forget them and how often do we think of our scalp or the tops of our feet. Elbows and the back of the knees are other areas often missed.
