Healing Power of Manuka Honey

Manuka HoneyManuka honey has been one of the hottest items in many health food stores across the country. This special type of honey contains properties that support the natural healing process as well as help to treat dry and scaly skin, support of joint mobility, and natural healing of wounds and immune defenses. A number of celebrities have been using Manuka honey in recent years but this is not a new product.

Active Manuka Honey is known to contain antibacterial properties and has been used by the indigenous of New Zealand for many years. Produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the native manuka bush, Manuka honey has been used since ancient times to treat multiple conditions. Conventional honey has anti-inflammatory properties that can quickly reduce pain, protects against damage caused by bacteria, and may also stimulate production of special cells that can repair tissue damaged by infection. Manuka honey can do all of that and much more.

What makes Manuka honey so special is that it contains additional antibacterial components including methylglyoxal (MG). MG is a compound found in most types of honey, but usually only in small quantities. Manuka honey contains a lot of MG due to a very high concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers. MG is thought to give manuka honey some of its antibacterial power. The higher the concentration of MG, the stronger the antibiotic effect.

Manuka honey is used for a variety of products including soaps, lozenges, lip balms and much more. A great product for treating minor wounds and burns, Manuka can also be helpful to a variety of health conditions such as reducing high cholesterol, treating diabetes, reducing systemic inflammation, treating gastrointestinal problems, and treating eye, ear, and sinus infections.
