winterskinDry, flaky or scaly skin is a common problem. Factors that contribute to the development of dry skin include exposure to cold or dry weather, and bathing frequently with harsh soaps. With winter season quickly approaching, the number of people with dry skin will increase. LuckyVitamin carries many nutritional supplements that can help combat this.

Dry and scaling skin can be an indication of an essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency. Many people with chronically dry skin see an improvement after 3-6 weeks of supplementation with 15ml (1 tablespoon) per day of flaxseed oil, sunflower oil or other sources of essential fatty acids.  Long-term supplementation with EFA’s should be accompanied by Vitamin E supplements.

Another supplement deficiency that can cause dry skin is Vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency usually causes skin with follicular hyperkeratosis. This manifests as small, rough, cone shaped and raised papules on the back and sides of the arms and thighs. A typical adult dose of Vitamin A is 25,000 IU/day for few months. There are many precautions using Vitamin A supplementation so make sure you consult with your doctor before starting any supplementation.

Some clinical information suggests dry skin can be associated with dietary factors.  Avoiding refined sugar, white flour, food additives, processed foods and allergenic foods have shown to improve dry skin conditions.

Winter weather also increases the risk for dry, cracked lips. Organic honey is a cheap and great way to remedy dry skin including cracked elbows and lips.  Just rub organic honey on the affected area at night and enjoy the benefits.
