Prevention Happens Before And After

Obese ManThe last thing you want to happen after a heart attack is a heart attack. You’ve already experienced one. Through the wonders of modern medicine, your strength and the knowledge of your doctor, you have recovered, but can you guarantee that the second one will end similarly? Even if you can, do you really want to go through that one more time? I am willing to bet that the answer is no. A heart attack is a frightening, painful medical occurrence that no one, including you, wants to repeat, yet not many people are taking the steps necessary to prevent a second one.

In a study of 1,253 overweight/obese heart attack patients, researchers found that on average they had lost only .2 percent of their body weight.  Many overweight individuals actually added to their girth, as did anyone who was depressed or quit smoking. This is a far cry from the five percent of your body weight doctors recommend losing and a startling statistic. One of the primary risk factors for your first heart attack is excess fat.  Why would the second be any different? Why would you think that maintaining the same or adding to your weight would not endanger an already weakened muscle? You cannot experience something as life altering as a heart attack and not allow it to alter your life.

If you have had a heart attack and are overweight or obese you must lose weight. You can start by limiting the fats, cholesterol and sodium in your diet. Then, you can exercise.  It’s a tricky prescription since you are not as strong as you once were and, thus, cannot rush into a vigorous workout regime. However, with the help of your doctor you can do it. Just start slowly. Give your heart time to heal. As your activity builds, you’ll find that you are not just losing weight but amassing energy, strengthening your heart muscle and lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, all of which will prevent a second attack.
