5 Reasons To Take L- Theanine

Filed Under: Supplements at 8:00 am | By: Dr. Jeremy Wolf, ND & Lead Wellness Advisor
l-theanineTheanine is an amino acid found in green tea, which when taken on its own may have some wildly useful medical applications. Most of the benefits surround the tranquil and relaxing affects of this amino acid. This amino acid has been found to be useful for certain conditions including anxiety, hypertension, and insomnia and even preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s. While most of the spotlight is commonly on green tea, today we are going to talk about the benefits of theanine.

One third of Americans report some form of insomnia. Whether it’s difficulty in falling asleep or difficulty in maintaining sleep through out the night. In a recent article researchers found that adding theanine to the nighttime routine of boys with ADHD actually improved some aspects of sleep quality.  Specifically this included a higher sleep percentage, improved sleep efficiency, as well as less activity during the sleep (less time awake after sleep onset).  Theanine is a safe product you can add to your night time routine to help improve your sleep quality.  However, the benefits don’t stop here.

Another very serious and unfortunately common condition is anxiety. People are always looking for something to help calm their nerves. Whether it is a pharmaceutical agent or an alternative supplement, herb, etc.  A very interesting article that I came across looked at the acute effects of L-theanine in comparison to Alprazolam (Xanax) on anticipatory anxiety in humans. The results of this double blind placebo controlled study showed some evidence for relaxing effects of L-theanine during the baseline condition while Alprazolam did not exert any anxiolytic effects in comparison with the placebo on any of the measures during the relaxed state. Unfortunately neither L-theanine nor alprazolam had any effects during the experimentally induced anxiety state.

One last topic to discuss is theanine’s role in Alzheimer’s prevention. There is no doubt that the medical field is always looking to add to the list of ways to assist in preventing the onset of dementia. L-theanine just may be one ingredient that they want to add to that list. One of the major pathological mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease is amyloid beta induced neurotoxicity. Now you may be saying what is that? For the purpose of this discussion all you need to know is that it is a major cause for Alzheimer’s. What this article found is that theanine reduced this neurotoxicity and may be useful in the prevention of AD.

With all of the benefits of theanine it is hard to argue adding it into your daily regimen. Shop LuckyVitamin for all of your theanine needs. Remember to always check with your health care practitioner before starting supplements.
