Filed Under: Herbs,Supplements at 7:00 am | By: Mauricio Matusiak, Senior Editor
Energy supplements have been helping people for years. These stimulants are often used to wake you up in the morning, get you through the afternoon slump, or keep you up late at night. However, conventional energy drinks may have side effects from headaches, stomach and sleep problems to serious issues such as increasing your heart rate and elevating blood pressure which may lead to a stroke or heart attack. Herbal supplements are a great alternative as most of these natural products are generally recognized as safe by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration). With plenty of options available, we present you 7 herbs for energy.

1. Ashwagandha

Known in Ayurvedic medicine for easing fatigue and nervous exhaustion, ashwagandha is a tonic used to energize the body and strengthen the immune system after illness. It can also help with stress and anxiety often associated with depression, lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar levels, and improve learning, memory and reaction time.

2. Ginseng

One of the most popular herbal supplements, ginseng can provide energy and combat fatigue. It works by increasing stamina, bolstering the immune system, and minimizing the effects of stress.

3. Guarana

Guarana is a potent source of caffeine and is known to contain more than twice as much caffeine as coffee. Guarana also contains molecules called tannins, which triggers the caffeine in guarana to release slowly, producing a long-lasting energy plateau.

4. Reishi

Reishi is a rare mushroom that is called “the elixir of life” in China. Research suggests that reishi can help by increasing energy, boosting the immune system and reducing stress. People drink reishi tea in place of coffee but this natural energy booster is also available in tablets, syrup or tincture.

5. Maca

Originally from the high mountains of the Andes in Peru, maca is a safe and nutritious herb that is considered a perfect natural energizer and invigorator. It’s known to boost energy levels, increase stamina and endurance, balance hormones, increase testosterone, relieve menstrual problems, and it can also act as an aphrodisiac.

6. Ginkgo

Ginkgo is known to increase the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in your body. ATP aids the brain in metabolizing glucose for energy, which improves mental function.

7. Stinging Nettle

A popular tea, stinging nettle can give you more energy than a cup of coffee, without the negative stimulant effects. It contains multiple vitamins and minerals.
