MemoSchool is back! For many students, it’s that time of the year to go back to classes and start learning and studying new things. It’s also time students really need to exercise their memory and need to work on focus and attention in order to do well in school. So, we bring the good news. Two recent studies have confirmed what past studies have already shown: omega-3 (DHA) can help boost memory and cognition.

In the first study from the University of Pittsburgh and published in PLOS One, healthy young adults improved their working memory by increasing their Omega-3 fatty acids intake.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are critical for the human body to function but this new research specifically shows the impact on the working memory of healthy young adults. In this study, the first of its kind, experts examined healthy young males and females ages 18 to 25 who heightened their omega-3 intake with supplements for 6 months. A working memory test, known as “n-back test”, was then given to the participants. The subjects completed the same series of outpatient procedures after they finished taking an omega-3 supplement approved by the Food and Drug Administration, for six months. Results of this last stage, from the working memory test and blood samples, showed an improvement in working memory.

These encouraging findings come out just a few months after a British study concluded that fish oil supplements can help boost memory after just five months. Researchers concluded that omega-3 fatty acid helps nerve cells communicate with each other consequently boosting brainpower. The supplements used in this study were rich in DHA from fish oils as the richest source of the nutrient is fish such as herring and mackerel. In addition, this new overview says the omega-3 fatty acid DHA has most benefit for people with existing memory problems, particularly when they are coping with physical or mental stress, something quite common during the school year.
