Five Hours of Focus?

5-Hour Energy drinkIt’s a small bottle, holding a mere two ounces of liquid, but according to its creators, that teeny amount packs a powerful punch. 5-hour Energy is an energy drink designed to pep you up for, you guessed it, five hours. Loaded with vitamins, amino acids and enzymes rather than sugar and caffeine, it will awaken your mind without jolting your body. You’ll be alert, focused and capable of getting through whatever the remainder of the day has to offer. And when your five hours are up, you won’t experience the crash associated with so many other drinks. You’ll find that you have eased out of your heightened state into a less peppy but no less pleasant frame of mind.

At least that’s what the product’s label and Web site allege, but is it true? To find out, I gulped down the berry-flavored version of 5-hour Energy at 3:30 on a recent workday afternoon.

The taste was not what I would call delectable, but it wasn’t horrendous. And since I only had to drink two ounces, I was past that hurdle in seconds. Then, I waited. I was told I would feel it in minutes, and surprisingly, I did. My mind, not my body, was soon more awake than it had been all day. I felt startlingly alert, desperate for something mental to wrap my brain around (good thing I was at work). It was, in all honesty, a little intense and overwhelming. The only relief was that I wasn’t jumpy. My legs weren’t bobbing, my hands weren’t twittering – I was able to sit still, even as my mind raced. It was an unusual sensation, and if it had remained for the full five hours, this wouldn’t be a favorable report. However, within an hour and a half, I was calmer, no longer mentally antsy yet still alert.

The drink’s effects lasted for the next few hours with a happy focus, helping me through my evening. The only negative experience was the drive home (poor planning on my part). Either there were far more cars on the road than usual or my awakened mind was too energized to cope with red light after painful red light. I’m not sure when exactly the pep wore off, as there was, as promised, no crash. Eight-thirty came and went without notice, and by the time I crawled into bed, I was no more alert or tired than usual.

If you are looking for a pick me up, give 5-Hour Energy a try. It worked for me; it could very well work for you.
