red-yeast-riceOld news, good news. By now, everyone should be aware of the health benefits of red yeast rice but you may be surprised how many people have never even heard of this incredible supplement that can help regulate cholesterol levels. It’s even more encouraging to hear that time and time again news studies continue to confirm the benefits of red yeast rice.

In a recent study, researchers concluded that red yeast rice may be an effective alternative treatment for high cholesterol for people who are unable to tolerate prescription drugs. The study, published in the BMC Alternative and Complimentary Medicine, also points out that cholesterol levels can improve in as early as eight weeks. The researchers found that LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels significantly decreased in participants taking red yeast rice when compared to those in the placebo group, with 22% and 15% reductions in LDL and total cholesterol, respectively.

Red yeast rice supplements have been around for years and human studies have shown positives results since the 1970s. Red yeast rice is the product of yeast (Monascus purpureus) grown on rice, and is served as a dietary staple in some Asian countries. It contains several compounds collectively known as monacolins, substances known to inhibit cholesterol synthesis. In addition to red yeast rice, many other ingredients have been used to reduce cholesterol but red yeast rice continues to lead the way in alternative medicine. Many people take red yeast rice in conjunction with CoQ10, considered by many the ideal formula to regulate cholesterol levels. A variety of different studies have found significant positive results from this all natural combination.
