What is DHEA?

Companies use abbreviations or short words for some supplements making life really difficult for most customers.

CLA, DMAE, COQ10, GABA and BCAA are just a few examples of products we may have no clue what they are.

DHEA is another one of these mysterious words but, despite the confusion, a quick explanation should help understanding why DHEA has been called the anti-aging and anti-cancer hormone.

DHEA is short for dehydroepiandrosterone (now we understand why they use abbreviations), which is a steroid hormone that plays an important role in several biologic functions. It regulates hormones, lowers blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, enhances overall immunity, inhibits diseases associated with aging, restores collagen and skin integrity and may prevent some certain tumors.

Current research suggests that DHEA may prevent and treat cardiovascular disease and cancer. DHEA is important to the human system because of its biochemical actions in crucial hormones such as testosterone, progesterone and corticosterone, controlling vital body functions.

DHEA has the ability to act as an anti-cancer agent and several types of cancer are associated with low levels of DHEA, such as breast, colon, lung and skin.

The adrenal glands produce DHEA, which cannot be acquired from food sources. DHEA production declines as we age and taking it as a supplement may be able to keep you looking younger. Doctors believe it is the buffer action of DHEA that helps prevent us from aging.

If that’s not interesting enough for one single supplement, DHEA may also promote the loss of body fat and it’s commonly used in products for weight loss.

    Great Blog and very informative! Regarding supplements, after years of trial and error and lots of $s spent, I now go with only three – (1) MuscleTech Anator, (2) any decent protein supplement (I change it up) and (3) Acai Fire for Men. Protein Supps of course everybody knows about. Anator I found to be VERY beneficial after training for mass/muscle recovery; this can be found at all the ususal sources. Acai Fire is less known and my latest addition, and has been KEY in my view for enabling concurrent mass retention and fat loss.
