When Heartburn Strikes

HeartburnHeartburn is such a common problem that some people don’t take it seriously. More than 60 million Americans have heartburn at least once a month, and about 15 million have it daily. That’s more people suffering from heartburn in the United States than the entire population of Sweden, Greece or Ecuador.

A recent report shows that some heartburn drugs, particularly Nexium and Prilosec pose risks instead of relief. Now, though, researchers are warning that this category of heartburn drugs, called proton pump inhibitors, may do more harm than good.

A series of new studies, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that daily use of these drugs, which suppress the production of stomach acid, increases the risk of infection with intestinal bacteria and increases the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women.

On the other hand, you can try natural heartburn supplements, safe to be taken daily and without the dangerous side effects. The majority of products use herbal formulas including natural enzymes. Apple pectin, turmeric root, and slippery elm are commonly used as well as vitamins and minerals, creating a perfect formula to prevent and relieve heartburn.

Furthermore, a healthy diet can significantly minimize heartburn. Avoid heartburn-triggering food such as chocolate, spicy foods, cheeseburgers and fries. Pace yourself. Eating slowly is one of the secrets to prevent heartburn as well as eating smaller portions. Try not to eat at least a couple hours prior bedtime.

Prevention is still the best was to stop heartburn. Most natural products can produce results in conjunction with a healthy diet, but do not rely on products to stop heartburn as it’s mainly caused by your diet, the way you eat, what you eat, and when you eat.
