Soy-Free
– If you are highly allergic or trying a paleo diet than you probably avoid soy like the plague. In their purest form, soybeans contain phytochemicals that may have negative effects on the body as well as anti-nutrients like enzyme inhibitors, which fortunately, are removed as part of the fermentation process.  And if you didn’t know, all soy in the US is genetically modified so it’s not a bad idea to enjoy it in moderation and choose supplements that are soy-free.

Dairy-Free – Did you know that 75% off the world is genetically unable to digest dairy products, specifically milk? Lactose intolerance is no joke – try to imagine a life without pizza — which is why dairy-free supplements are a must-have for your regimen. Another component of milk to be mindful of is casein. Though a select few may have an intolerance or allergy to this phosphoprotein it’s still important to look for the dairy-free symbol on your supplements to prevent annoying side effects like gas, bloating an diarrhea.

Vegan – If you are a hardcore vegan than you know most vitamin d3 supplements are derived from lanolin, a waxy substance derived from fish oil or sheep. Another a relatively “harmless” additive to look out for if you are vegan is gelatin, which is the end product of a process that starts with boiling down bovine body parts. See all of the things you don’t think about?

Gluten-Free – A recent study found the presence of gluten in 23.8% of supplements and probiotics which can cause major problems for those who have celiac disease. The supplement manufacturing process often times uses grain as a filler. Even worse, ingredients such as natural flavors and colors could really be gluten in disguise. Look for the gluten-free certified label just to be safe.

Non-GMO – Most US crops — we’re talking 80-90% — are genetically modified. And vitamin c supplements are derived from corn. You know where we are going with this. Yup, GMOs can potentially be in your supplements. Raise the standard for yourself by looking for brands that feature the Non-GMO Projectverified label. Don’t see the label? Contact the manufacturer. You will be happy you did for yourself and for the planet.
