The Importance of Multimineral Supplements

MMMultimineral supplements are not as popular as multivitamins but people should not forget the importance of minerals. Around five percent of the human body weight is made up of minerals, and the body must have sufficient supply of these minerals in order to function properly. Minerals are essential building blocks for teeth, bones, muscle, soft tissue, nerve cells and the blood, but are also needed for proper digestion, muscle response, hormone production, manufacture of antibodies, and communication in the nervous system.

A proper daily consumption of minerals is essential to maintain overall health. Multimineral supplements are important for people who have poor diets or are on restrictive diets. The majority of multivitamin supplements contain relatively small amounts of minerals, so if you need more than what these products offer, you should consider taking a multimineral product.

Magnesium, calcium, and iron are the most needed minerals but you should not forget about zinc, potassium, phosphorus, copper, and chromium. Magnesium is a catalyst in the processing of fats, carbohydrates, calcium, proteins, and some minerals. Calcium helps in the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones, and also helps in the utilization of vitamin A, B complex vitamin C and D, manganese, iron, magnesium, zinc and phosphorous. Iron, protein and copper form the oxygen transporter in the blood stream to help maintaining healthy red blood cells.
