balance-phFinding the perfect balance is one of the most important things in life. Whether you find the perfect balance for your diet and exercise habits or the perfect amount of time to spend with family and friends, finding the perfect balance is often essential for a happy life.

How about your pH balance? Health experts believe that having the perfect pH balance is essential for a healthy life. Maintaining the ideal alkaline/acidity balance can promote benefits in your body as well as prevent health issues.

Did you know that pH stands for power of hydrogen? That is the measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body. The total pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 considered to be neutral. Most water has the neutral pH of 7 including most tap water, spring water, sea water, and river water. A pH less than 7 is said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline. The ideal pH is slightly alkaline, ranging from 7.30 to 7.45.

The human body carefully regulates the amount of acids and bases in your blood because if the pH of your blood fluctuates beyond a very narrow range it can cause proteins and cells not to work properly. Drinking water that has a balanced pH is one way to prevent this.

Measure the pH of your drinking water by using one a pH test strips. One of the best ways to drink a neutral, pH 7 water is to use a water distiller. These devices work by heating water to its boiling point and then collecting the water vapor, resulting in pure and free of contaminants (no acids or bases) water with a pH of 7.

Alternatively, sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, may be added in small amounts to drinking water to raise its pH when it is acidic. On the other hand, you can add oranges or lemons to your water or crush up vitamin C tablets as vitamin C is mildly acidic. Measure the pH of your water after you have added these to ensure you have balanced the pH of your drinking water.
